Cement Types and Grades: OPC vs PPC β€” Which One Should You Use?

Walk into any building materials store and you'll see cement bags labeled OPC or PPC, followed by a number like 33, 43, or 53. Here's what that actually means for your build.

OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) is the more traditional option, made purely from clinker and gypsum. It develops strength faster in the early days after pouring, which makes it a common choice for structural elements like columns, beams, and slabs where early strength matters β€” for example, when you need to remove shuttering sooner.

PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) blends clinker with pozzolanic materials like fly ash. It develops strength more slowly but tends to be more durable over the long run, generates less heat during curing (useful in mass concreting), and is generally considered better suited to plastering, masonry work, and any structure exposed to moisture or chemical attack, like foundations and water-retaining structures.

The grade number (33, 43, 53) refers to the compressive strength in megapascals (MPa) the cement achieves after 28 days of curing under standard test conditions. Grade 53 is the highest-strength OPC grade and is typically used for RCC structural work in high-rise or heavy-load construction. Grade 43 is the most commonly used all-purpose grade for residential construction. Grade 33 is now rarely used, mostly limited to low-strength applications like plastering or non-structural brickwork.

For a typical two- or three-storey home, most contractors in Griffy's network use a combination: OPC 43 or 53 for the structural RCC work, and PPC for plastering, brickwork, and flooring screed. Ask your contractor which combination they're planning to use and why β€” a clear answer is usually a good sign of experience.
